    Strategic variables of commercialization of renewable energy technologies

    Utilization of renewable energy sources, as domestic and local natural resources, has important role among the energy policies of the governments. However, diffusion of renewable energy technologies have faced with challenges that slow the development plans and affect security of energy supply. As commercialization is an important contributor to successful diffusion and adaptation of a technology, this research studies the role of commercialization of renewable energy technologies and identifies the key factors of commercialization. A decision matrix is also presented to show the best government strategies for successful commercialization of renewable energy products and services. The contributions help researchers and policy makers to focus more on the strategic variables of commercialization of renewable energy technologies.©2015 AIP Publishing.     Productivity growth in electric energy retail in Colombia. A bootstrapped malmquist indices approach

    This paper offers a productivity growth estimate for electric energy commercialization firms in Colombia, using a non-parametric Malmquist bootstrap methodology. The estimation and methodology serve two main purposes. First, in Colombia commercialization firms are subject to a price-cap regulation scheme, a non-common arrangement in the international experience for this part of the industry. Therefore the paper’s result suggest an estimate of the productivity factor to be used by the regulator, not only in Colombia but in other countries where commercialization is a growing part of the industry (renewable energy, for instance). Second, because of poor data collection from regulators and firms themselves, regulation based on a single estimation of productivity seems inappropriate and error-prone. The nonparametric Malmquist bootstrap estimation allows an assessment of the result in contrast to a single one estimation. This would open an opportunity for the regulator to adopt a narrower and more accurate productivity estimation or override an implausible result and impose a productivity factor in the price-cap to foster the development of the industry.DEA, Malmquist, Productivity growth, Bootstrap, Electricity commercialization,Colombia

    Partnerships in implementing sustainability policies theoretical considerations and experiences from Spain

    The greening of economic and industrial activities requires that new relationships be formed between private actors who often never met before on the business or policy arenas. To initiate and give direction to the sustainability transition, public actors may choose to become involved in partnerships for policy implementation, next to industrial prime movers. After having catalyzed the process, new forms of public-private partnerships may emerge, in the transition towards ‘green private-private partnerships’.\ud This paper presents theoretical considerations regarding the types and evolution of publicprivate partnerships (PPPs) involved in the implementation of sustainability policies. The central argument is that PPPs are themselves in a process of transition, with changes in the types of activity, types of investment and types of financing on which partnerships focus. Empirically, the paper analyses the greening of the electricity industry in Spain and looks specifically at the cases of wind electricity and biomass technologies’ diffusion. The evolution of PPPs shows clearly that there is a transition from ‘project-vehicle-partnerships’ to ‘technology-specific-partnerships’ to ‘renewables-development-partnerships’. In parallel there is a transition from ‘internally-financed-partnerships’ towards ‘bank-financedpartnerships’ with a substantially higher diffusion potential. Finally, another transition was observed from ‘learning-partnerships’ towards ‘commercialization-partnerships’. As the greening of the electricity industry advances, there is a gradual retreat of public actors and an increase in new green private-private-partnerships. Through these analyses, the paper fits into the conference theme regarding the dynamics for public-private partnerships. In the same time it is relevant for the theme regarding the implementation of public policies and technologies to promote sustainable development. Understanding the metamorphosis of partnerships supports policy-makers to design policies facilitating wider engagement in PPPs, a more secure operation environment and a faster transition towards new green private-private partnerships in industrial activities.     AbstractSmart grid technology is the key for an efficient use of distributed energy resources. Noting the climate change becomes an important issue the whole world is currently facing, the ever increasing price of petroleum products and the reduction in cost of renewable energy power systems, opportunities for renewable energy systems to address electricity generation seems to be increasing. However, to achieve commercialization and widespread use, an efficient energy management strategy of system needs to be addressed. Recently, the concept of smart grid has been successfully applied to the electric power systems. This paper presents the study of integrating renewable energy in smart grid system. The introductory sections provide the role of renewable energy and distributed generation in smart grid system. Subsequent sections cover the concept of smart grid as well as benefits and barrier of smart grid renewable energy system. Pricing is a significant variable in success of renewable energy promotion. Thus, it is important to gain insight to renewable energy pricing by considering unique characteristics associated with renewable energy alternatives. A review of work done in renewable smart grid systems in recent years indicates the promising potential of such research characteristics in the future. This would be useful to developers and practitioners of renewable energy systems and to policy makers

    Algae and Biodiesel: Patenting Energized as Green Goes Commercial

    In the twenty-first century, predominant dependence on fossil fuels as energy resources will not be sustainable. Developing and commercializing green energy innovations will be an essential component of the transition to a more diversified energy economy. Algal biodiesel is one of the most promising green fuels because of its potential as a renewable and sustainable fuel source without displacing food crops. Algal biodiesel research and development are necessary early steps towards a transition to a green energy economy. The strategic use of strong patent portfolios will drive this by attracting investment, incentivizing innovation and accelerating commercialization. Whereas algal biodiesel research and development is largely still early stage, this will rapidly change as aggressive investments and government subsidies facilitate economically competitive algal biodiesel to enter the energy market. Algal domestication, improvement and industrial utilization for biodiesel production will therefore inevitably create value, leading to increased assertion of property rights, of which intellectual property rights in the form of patents are fundamental.
